Every piece is meticulously designed with the client’s needs as the guiding principle, seamlessly blending our signature mid-century Scandinavian design elements, soft curves, refined tapers, and sustainable materials, into a one-of-a-kind creation bearing the Harley & Steffan hallmark.

Our Process

We work closely with clients to ensure each piece resonates with their vision and needs. Here’s how our commission process works:

1. Initial Consultation

Let's talk! Either via email, video call, or in person, we'll explore your vision, project scope, preferred woods, and design preferences. We welcome references, mood boards, and design context to guide the creative process, laying the foundation for a truly bespoke creation.

2. Proposal & Design Development

After our conversation, we’ll present a proposal outlining the design concept, hand-selected materials, finishes, timeline, and pricing. We refine the design collaboratively until it perfectly aligns with your requirements.

3. Deposit & Scheduling

Once the concept is confirmed, a deposit secures your commission and reserves a dedicated slot in our East Sussex schedule, ensuring your piece receives our undivided attention.

4. Crafting & Progress Updates

Your bespoke item is handcrafted using time-honored techniques paired with modern precision. For intricate commissions, we offer progress updates with images and insights, inviting you into the artisanal journey.

5. Finishing & Approval

Upon completion, we share high-quality images of the piece prior to application of finish for your approval. Any final adjustments are made to ensure it embodies your exact vision, then finished and polished to a deep satin luster.

6. Delivery

Each creation is securely packed in our sustainable packaging for safe transit, and dispatched via Royal Mail Tracked 24 service.

  • As part of our ethos towards sustainability, we use a select range of responsibly sourced woods, like oak, walnut, and iroko (African teak), from offcuts or ethical, FSC-certified timber yards. These are procured in specific dimensions that are used throughout our range and showcase the clean lines of our mid-century Scandinavian designs. While we prefer this eco-conscious approach, we’re happy to discuss other materials during your consultation to suit your vision.

  • We specialize in handcrafted clocks, homeware, and bespoke pieces like tool stations, display stands, and business card stations, all designed with mid-century Scandinavian aesthetics. If you have a unique idea, we’ll explore how to bring it to life within our woodworking expertise.

  • A 20% deposit is required to secure your commission and reserve a slot in our schedule. The remaining balance is due upon completion, before delivery. We provide a detailed cost breakdown in the proposal, and any additional fees for design changes are discussed in advance.

  • We include up to two rounds of design revisions in the proposal stage, to ensure the piece meets your vision. If further changes are needed during crafting, we’ll discuss any impacts on timeline or cost to keep the process transparent and collaborative.
